Depleted HBL facing innings defeat

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, Jan 23: Habib Bank, already deprived of eight players on international duty, were heading for an innings defeat after being forced to follow on by National Bank on the second day of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy pre-quarterfinal tie at National Stadium on Thursday.

HBL were reeling at 135 for eight in their second innings at close of play after making a paltry 109 in their first essay. They still need an unlikely 94 runs to make NBP bat again.

Left-arm fast bowler Zahid Saeed caused the main damage in the first innings by picking up five for 41. But it was lanky speedster Shabbir Ahmed who really started the slide.

Shabbir sent back opener Riffatullah with the third legitimate delivery of his opening over. He also got rid of Khaqan Arsal cheaply.

Only HBL skipper Akram Raza managed to make some sort of contribution with an unbeaten 25.

Test batsman Hasan Raza was a big disappointment. He made only seven in the first innings and then was comprehensively bowled off-stump by Shabbir for four.

Shabbir went to capture four for 39 in HBL’s second innings.

All-rounder Mohammad Javed was most impressive. He made a handy 45 as NBP added another 62 to their overnight tally of 276 for seven. He then chipped in with three for 13 with his nippy medium-pacers before taking two more scalps for six runs late in the day.
