Ex-minister’s wife passes away


DHAKA, Jan 23: Begum Syeda Fatina Rahman, wife of Fazlur Rahman, who was commerce minister in Pakistan’s first cabinet and later education minister, died here on Monday after a prolonged illness. She was 86.

An educationist and social worker, Begum Rahman had established the Model Nursery and Primary School in Karachi in 1954. Later it was upgraded to secondary level. After the death of her husband, Begum Rahman renamed it as the Fazlur Rahman Memorial School.

In 1972, after her departure for Dhaka, it was nationalized and became the Fazlur Rahman Government Girls Secondary School. She was laid to rest on Thursday. She is survived by her sons, Sohail F. Rehman and Salman F. Rehman.
