LAHORE, Jan 22: Razia Sultana of Wapda created a new record in hammer throw on the first day of the 37th national athletics championship at the Wapda Sports Complex on Wednesday.
Razia with a throw of 37.50 metres shattered the previous record set by her compatriot Zeenat Parveen in 2001 National Games in Lahore.
Pakistan Army, the defending champions in men, with two gold, four silver and three bronze medals maintained their supremacy, but are facing a challenge from Wapda who had also grabbed two golds.
Army with 49 points are the leaders followed by Wapda with 30 points.
The reigning champions Wapda in women events, with two gold medals, two bronze and a bronze were also in command.
In the men’s contest, Army claimed their first gold in pole vault event through Mohammad Ayub. Wasim Khan earned second gold for Army in long jump.
Wapda clinched two golds through Irfan Hussain in javelin throw and Azhar Samdani in 100 metres. Navy also claimed a gold medal through Waris Masih in 10,000 metres.
In women’s competitions, Wapda secured their second gold through Zeenat Parveen in shot put. Navy’s Gulnaz Ara got the solitary gold in the 800 metres. Police got a gold medal through Rrum Khanam in 100 metres.
