PESHAWAR, Jan 22: Electricity supply to several parts of Mohmand Agency, Fata, was disrupted on Tuesday night when some unknown miscreants blew up a main tower of Wapda, official sources said.

The transmission tower of the 66kv Ghalanai-Shabqadar power line was blown up with powerful explosives at Sur Killay, a village some five kilometres from Shabqadar on way to the agency.

As the tower fell down, several villages in the agency and around Shabqadar plunged into darkness. The incident took place at 9:00pm, according to an official press release issued by the Peshawar Electricity Supply Company (Pesco).

Though the power supply to some of the affected villages was partially restored, many areas were still without electricity till the filing of this report.

“Repair works have been started by the staff of the National Transmission Dispatch Centre and Pesco, however it may take a few days to fully restore the supply to the affected parts,” said a Peshawar-based spokesman for Wapda.

He said the consumers getting power from the grid stations at Ghalanai and Lakkarai suffered directly owing to the incident.

“Both the grid stations have come at a halt, with the distribution system getting collapsed,” said the sources.

They said the electricity supply to 60 per cent areas was partially restored from the nearest available distribution system.

This fresh incident, said the sources, caused a financial loss of around Rs1.2 million to Wapda.

A few weeks ago, two large towers were blown up at Darra Adamkhel, and then in a similar attempt some tribesmen damaged another tower at Kohat.

“Sale of power will also get affected in several parts of Mohmand Agency and Shabqadar, causing a huge loss to Wapda,” conceded the Wapda spokesman.
