Easy for Thorpe

STOCKHOLM, Jan 21: Despite a late event switch, Ian Thorpe still qualified easily for the 400 metres freestyle final scheduled for the evening session of a World Cup short course meeting on Tuesday.

The Australian decided not to compete in the 100 freestyle, in which he finished a disappointing fifth in Paris last weekend, and reverted to the event at which he is the Olympic and world champion as well as world record holder.

He qualified for the final in three minutes 47.26 seconds, well over three seconds ahead of nearest heat rival Valerio Cleri of Italy.—Reuters
