RAWALPINDI, Jan 20: The civil judge and judicial magistrate, Hidayatullah Shah, on Monday awarded five-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) each to two persons convicted of committing robberies.
The court also imposed a Rs2,000 fine on each of the convicts, Tahir Ali and Jehanzeb. The accused will have to undergo another month of imprisonment if they failed to pay the fine.
The accused were booked by the Westridge police for committing robberies, while the police also recovered some stolen valuables from their possession.
The additional district and sessions judge, Mohammad Sarwar Sidhu, awarded two-year RI to a man for smuggling drugs.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict, Abbas. In case the convict fails to pay the fine, he will have to undergo another two months of RI.
The Civil Lines police recovered 9kg heroin from the possession of the convict, who also confessed to his crime in the court.
The same court rejected the bail application of an accused, Nawaz Khan, who had been booked by the Waris Khan police for murdering a person.
The additional district and sessions judge, Sayyed Pervez Ali Shah, awarded 18-month RI to a drug-peddler.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs20,000 on the convict, Farzand Khan. The accused will have to undergo another three months of RI if he failed to pay the fine.
The convict, who also confessed to the crime, had been booked by the R. A. Bazaar police for smuggling 1kg heroin.
The district and sessions judge, Malik Dost Mohammad Khemta, awarded one-year RI to a convicted drug-dealer. The court also imposed a Rs1,000 fine on the convict. In case of default, he will have to undergo another month of jail-term.
The convict was booked by the R. A. Bazaar police for possessing 125 grams of charas.
The judge also rejected the bail application of an accused, Zaheer Abbas, who was arrested for allegedly abducting and assaulting a woman.
The senior civil judge, Zubair Ali Cheema, directed the Punjab government to withheld the salaries of the secretary health, Punjab, and principal of Rawalpindi Medical College for not complying with the court orders.
The decision was taken as both the officials were not appearing before the court to record their statements in a civil suit despite receiving show cause notices.
Meanwhile different courts sent about 96 Afghan nationals on judicial remand to Adiala Jail.
The Afghans were arrested by officials of various police stations after receiving special directions from the IGP Punjab, Syed Masud Shah, to arrest illegal immigrants living in Rawalpindi.
