HONOLULU (Hawaii), Jan 19: US PGA Tour rookie Aaron Baddeley opened up a two-shot lead on world number two Ernie Els of South Africa after the third round of the $4.5 million Hawaii Open on Saturday.
The 21-year-old Australian returned a five-under-par 65 to finish 15-under overall on 195, two strokes ahead of Els (66) at the Waialae Country Club.
Americans Robert Gamez (65), Briny Baird (67) and Chris DiMarco (69) shared third place on 200, one ahead of Japan’s Shigeki Maruyama (69).
Baddeley, who shared the lead overnight with South African Retief Goosen, blitzed his way to a five-under-par 30 on the front nine which included a 40-foot eagle putt on the par-five ninth.
Goosen never recovered from a triple-bogey seven at the first and finished with a two-over-par 72 for 202.
Els struggled on the front nine before taking advantage of the easier back nine. He was six shots off the pace at the turn but made up four of those on the homeward stretch.

TITLE FOR PEARCE
AUCKLAND: New Zealander Mahal Pearce won the New Zealand Open by two shots from Australian Brett Rumford after storming the course during the last round on Sunday.
It was the 26-year-old’s first victory as a professional three years after leaving the amateur ranks.
Pearce, who shot rounds of 69, 70, 69 and 70, finished with something of an anti-climax after going out of bounds off the tee on the 18th and ending up with a double bogey six.
But he had a four-shot cushion over Rumford going into the final hole and the double bogey merely reduced his winning margin to two at 10-under.
Pearce, nicknamed Taj, began the day two shots behind overnight leader and playing partner Chris Downes but did not give up a bogey until the 16th hole, while picking up five shots.
Australian Downes suffered with some early bogeys but despite picking up in the middle stages could not keep up the pace with Pearce on the back nine.
Michael Campbell, the 2000 champion, was favoured to move from third and take his second New Zealand Open title, but three early bogeys ended his hopes.
