LAHORE, Jan 19: PIA, National Bank (NBP), Pakistan Army and Police from pool “A” while Wapda, Habib Bank (HBL), PTCL and Allied Bank (ABL) from pool “B” have qualified for the final round of the 50th national hockey championship Sunday.

The fifth team for the final round will be decided on Jan 22 from the match between the teams which will secure fifth position from each pool. The final of the departmental qualifying round will held the same day.

Three goals from Kashif Jawwad helped HBL drew 4-4 with Wapda, cancelling out Sohail Abbas’s second hat trick of the tournament.

Shahid Rabbani slammed home for Wapda when the game was only four minutes old. Sohail was on rampage as he converted a penalty corner in the 7th, and then in the 11th and 13th minute to compete his hat trick.

Kashif’s 19th-minute strike reduced the margin, who scored his second in the 53rd minute. Ejaz Rasool narrowed the margin 4-3 in the 57th minute, while Kashif netted his third in the 65th   minute off a short corner.

Mohammad Sarwar scored four times to enable ABL earn a 6-4 win   over Customs in a match marred by ugly incident involving protests from the bench officials of both the teams.

ABL were awarded a penalty stroke in the 21st minute by umpire Iftikhar on which Customs raised objection but Danish Kaleem’s attitude was most aggressive for which he was shown a yellow card. Customs manager Shafique continued to protest on umpire’s decision from the bench.

Later, ABL’s Mohammad Saqlain was tackled by a Customs defender. It seemed defender’s stick hit Saqlain’s hand who threw the stick out of the field for which he was shown a green card.

ABL manager Khalid Saeed raised hue and cry on the decision while Customs manager pressed the umpire to treat Saqlain just like the way Danish was treated by showing a yellow.

The tournament director, Col Zafar Ali, nevrtheless, did not take any action against the managers.

ABL made a flying start through Saqlain who converted the 16th-minute penalty corner. Sarwar banged home twice in the 21st and 31st minute to make it 3-0.

Customs  scored  their first goal when Atif slammed in a short corner in the 39th minute. Sarwar added his third in the 40th minute.

Atif was on target again in the 44th minute off a schort corner, while Customs Shabbir reduced the margin 4-3 also on a penalty corner in the 56th minute.

ABL again extended their lead through Sarwar in the 62nd minute followed by a goal from Zahid Afzal in the 65th minute. Customs got their fourth goal from Shabbir in the 68th minute.

Jamil Khan scored twice to help Pakistan Navy edge past Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) 3-2.

POF got the lead when Shafiqul Islam scored in the 22nd minute. Navy restored parity when Zahid Naseem struck in the 36th minute. Jamil put Navy 2-1 ahead in the 42nd minute. POF equalised through Zia Safdar two minutes later. Jamil scored his second in the 68th minute which sealed the fate of the match.

NBP walloped Police 5-1 by taking the lead through Zeeshan Ashraf in the 12th minute. Police levelled through Mohammad Shahbaz in the 21st minute.

NBP netted four more as Imran Warsi made it 2-1 converting a short-corner in the 23rd minute, Jawaid Iqbal increased the lead 3-1   in the 31st minute, Adnan Zakir scored in the 47th minute, and Mohammad Anis chipped in with a 55th-minute goal.

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited outplayed University Grants Commission 6-0.

Najam Sheikh found the cage in the 6th and 12th minute, Tariq Aziz scored in the 31st minute, Naeem Akram contributed a goal in the 58th minute, Aqeel Hussain scored twice (65th and 68th minutes) to complete the rout.

Army defeated PTV 6-1. Mohammad Imran gave Army an early lead when he converted a 4th-minute penalty corner. Yousaf doubled the lead in the 8th minute, while Imran struck his second in the 26th minute.

Irfan was again on target in the 36th minute. PTV’s consolation   goal came from Shahid in the 45th minute, while Army scored two more, first through Sajid in the 48th minute and then Dilawar Hussain in the dying minutes of the game.
