Criminal mistakes costly for Parrot
BLACKPOOL (England), Jan 18: John Parrot, the former world champion from Liverpool, battled back from 4-2 down to 4-4 and had great chances to snatch the decider from John Day, but missed a simple final yellow with the rest, then a straight green of its spot with the other five coloured balls at his mercy. John Day from Bridgend Wales, goes through to pay Paul Hunter in the final stages of th Citywest Irish Masters in Dublin in March, having won five qualifying matches here in Norbreck Castle Hotel. “I have just thrown away the match,” said 38-year-old Parrot, who is in danger of dropping out of the top 32. World No. 140 John Day took the first frame with a break of 67 and added another break of 105 in the fourth to go ahead 3-1 at the interval. The next two were shared when Parrot knocked in an 89 to make it 4-3 and levelled the tie with 37 and 31. The Welshman broke down on 47 in the final frame but Parrot could not take advantage as day sealed the match by sinking green and brown. Stuart Bingham got through to play fellow Essex professional Ronnie O’Sullivan with a 5-4 defeat of Malta’s Tony Drago. There were other final frame finishes. Leicester teenager Mark Selby bat Surrey’s David Grey 5-4, coming back from 4-2 down and rattling in a 63 in the final frame. Glasgow’s Jamie Burnett beat Hong Kong’s Marcu Fu 5-4 and Liverpool’s Rod Lawler edged out Dominic Dale by the same score. Six times world champion Steve Davis, who has recently become a poker addict, beat Sean Storey 5-2 to set up a tied with Stephen Lee in Dublin. Grimsby’s Storey pinched the first frame on the pink then Davis took the next three with a top break of 40. A run of 53, allowed Storey to pull back 3-2. But Davis finally sealed the match by winning the next two frame with a 31 clearance in the final frame. The LG champion Chris Small is also bidding for a top 16 place and helped his cause with a 5-4 defeat of Mike Dunn. The Edinburgh man was down 3-0 but took four frames in row with breaks of 74 and 50 to clinch the match. Dave Harold set up a match with Ken Doherty by comfortably beating Bournemouth’s Paul Wykes 5-1.
