Sarwar’s late winner saves ABL

LAHORE, Jan 18: Mohammad Sarwar’s late winner helped Allied Bank overcome a fighting Pakistan Navy 5-4 in the 50th national hockey championship departmental qualifying round at National Hockey Stadium on Saturday.

Navy drew first blood, scoring through Zahid Naseem in the 5th minute. ABL responded, scoring three goals in a row. Asif Bajwa netted the equaliser in the 7th minute, Aleem Raza put the bankers ahead 2-1 in the 22nd minute, while Zahid Afzal banged home five minutes later.

Navy fought back and reduced the margin when Riaz Ahmad was on target in the 29th minute and Mohammad Ahmad restored parity a minute before halftime.

Both sides were again locked at 4-4 when the bankers scored through Babar Abdullah in the 46th minute, Navy’s Mohammad Imran equalised in the 61st minute off a penalty corner.

Sarwar’s 69th-minute effort finally rescued ABL from a possible defeat.

Police overpowered Pakistan Army 2-1. Police took early lead in the 8th minute when Mohammad Shahbaz converted a short corner. Naeem Akhtar doubled the lead in the 45th minute.

Army scored the solitary goal through Mohammad Sajid in the 55th minute.

Penalty corner specialist Sohail Abbas hammered seven goals including a hat trick to help Wapda thrash Customs 10-1.

Sohail, who was in excellent form and converted seven of the eight penalty corners, started with a 5th-minute goal and completed his hat trick by scoring in the 18th and 20th minutes.

Rehan Butt increased the lead 4-0 in the 28th minute before Sohail scored his fourth in the 30th minute and Shahid Rabbani netted in the 33rd minute.

Sohail added two more goals after resumption, in the 37th minute and the 54th minute followed by a Aamir Hussain goal which made it 9-0.

Customs got the consolation through Danish Kaleem on a penalty corner in the 66th minute. Sohail scored in the 68th minute to complete the tally.

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) defeated lowly-rated Pakistan Ordnance Factories 3-0.

Ghazanfar Ali converted a 21st-minute short corner Akhtar Ali extended the lead in the 44th minute, while Aqeel Hussain sealed the fate of the match scoring in the 55th minute.

Five goals by Kashif Jawad and three by Ejaz Rasool gave Habib Bank (HBL) an emphatic 12-0 win over University Grants Commission (UGC).

HBL gained the lead when Haider Hussain converted a penalty corner in the 5th minute. Mohammad Khalid doubled the lead seven minutes later. Ejaz scored his first goal in the 24th minute, Qavi Khan contributed a goal two minute before break, while Kashif struck in the dying moments of the first half.

Kashif scored his second in the 43rd minute, Imran Khan enhanced the lead 7-0 in the 48th minute. Two minutes later, Ejaz scored his second goal. Kashif earned his third in the 58th minute and Ejaz struck his third a minute later.

Kashif added two more first in the 66th minute and then in the 68th to complete the rout.

PIA scored their fifth consecutive victory when they outclassing PAF 7-2.

The national airlines took the lead through Kamran Ashraf in the 2nd minute, but were shocked when the airmen restored parity through Hayat Khan in the same minute.

Farooq struck his first in the 29th minute, Malik Shafqat found the cage in the 29th minute, Atif Bashir made it 4-1 in the 32nd minute.

Shahbaz Ahmad chipped in with a goal in the 39th minute, Farooq got his second in the 43rd minute, while Irfan Mahmood’s goal came in the 47th minute. PAF reduced the margin through Ameer Hamza in the 60th minute.
