Fair Play has an edge in Jinnah Cup

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Jan 18: The Jinnah Cup, to be run over 1200 metres features the six-event card drawn up for the 19th Lahore Winter Meeting to be held on Sunday.

The Jinnah Cup was instituted in 1996 to pay homage to the Father of Nation. Since then it is an important annual event for three-year-old Pakistani colts and fillies during the Lahore racing calendar.

In the Jinnah Cup, three of the six contenders Muqadar, Fair Play and Theatre’s Breeze come into reckoning on their recent performances this season.

The other three have not shown any form. If any one of them clicks, this will be a great surprise for the backers of form.

Fair Play, a bay filly from Replay out-of-Lust Of Love, owned by Sohrab Khan, has an edge over the rest of the small field. Her main rivals are expected to be the bay colt Muqadar (Dexter-Friends Not Masters) and another bay filly Theatre’s Breeze (Theatre’s Dream-Desert Breeze). Both have won a race each which was not as impressive as that of Fair Play.

The other cup event, the Rohri Cup, a class I, II and III combined handicap race to be contested over a mile seems an open affair on handicap as well as form.

The Conqueror, after his four wins being placed second twice, gets a weight of nine stones two pounds in weight scales. The bay filly Red Storm had in her previous outings shown liking for the mile distance and similar is the case of the blue-roan gelding Millennium Count.

The rest among the field are either badly handicapped or have shown no form in their recent outings. Thus there seems to be no contender edging out over the rest. This makes the race wide open which will be the fifth race of the day.

Blue Dawn and Dizzy Height stand out in the Gojra Plate, a class IV division I handicap race to be contested over a mile. Both should fight it out for this event, the last on the six- event card. The first race will be held at 12.30 pm.
