Army retain title with seven golds

LAHORE,  Jan 16: Pakistan Army with 25 points retained the national boxing title at the Wapda Sports Complex on Thursday.

Army bagged seven golds, one silver and two bronze medals to maintain their supremacy in the game.

Karachi  Port Trust (KPT) with 14 points (three  golds,  two silver, one bronze) took the runners-up position.

The  hosts Wapda, with one gold, three silver and a bronze medal, claimed the third slot.

The Army  pugilists completely dominated the finals, picking up   seven golds in the eight events they contested in.

Asghar Ali Shah of KPT, picked up gold, after he outpointed Sher Khan, 23-6 points in the 64 kg weight category.

Army  made  an impressive start when Nauman Karim  (48  kg) defeated Ali Baloch (KPT) easily 22-3.

Akhtar  Pervaiz claimed the second gold for Army  defeating Jawad Hussain (Navy) 22-12 points. in the 51kg class.

Aqeel  Ahmad who contested the fourth round with  bruised face toppled  Sindh’s Naushad Fateh in the 54 kg class to grab the Army’s third  gold.

In the 69 kg division, Naseer Ahmad outpointed Javed Jan, the lone boxer of  Karachi  Electric Supply Corporation (KESC), who  made his   entry into the final. Naseer won easily 25-8.

Saeed Ahmad, picked up the fifth gold, but he had to break out into a sweat, after overcoming the spirited challenge put up by Manzoor  Ahmad of  KPT in the 75 kg class. Saeed  won  a close encounter 20-17.

Ahmed  Ali  was  another victor of from the Army when the referee stopped the fight in the first round against Muzzamil (Punjab) in the 81 kg class. Due to a barrage of punches by Ahmed, Muzammil received facial injuries and was forced to throw in the towel.

Shaukat Ali defeated Shujah Abbas (Wapda) 22-3 to  complete the Army’s tally of seven gold medals.

The  lone gold medalist of the Asian Games from  Pakistan, Mehrullah  (KPT), presented  his  department  with a second  gold,   defeating Wapda’s Hayatullah, in the 57 kg class.  The  referee  stopped   the contest in the second round as Hayatullah could not continue  his fight further.

Shahid  Jan won the third gold medal for the KPT, defeating   Sahib  Khan (Wapda) in a tough encounter by 20 points to 17, in the 60 kg class.

Wapda’s solitary gold medal came through Muzaffar Iqbal in the 91 kg class, after he outpointed Riaz Kansi (Balochistan) 22-3, to be adjudged the best boxer of the championship.

Results:

48  kgs:  Nauman Karim (Army) bt Ali Baloch (KPT)  22-3.   Imran Hafeez (Wapda) and Ijaz Ahmed (Punjab) Bronze.

51 kgs: Akhtar Pervaiz (Army) bt Jawad Hussain (Navy) 22-12. Abid Ali (Wapda) and Shahid Jan (Sindh) Bronze.

54 kgs: Aqeel Ahmad (Army) bt Naushad Fateh (Sindh) 25-3.   Muhammad Ishaque (Balochistan) and Abdul Majeed (KPT) Bronze.

57 kgs: Mehrullah (KPT) bt Hayatullah (Wapda). RSC. Bakhat Hussain (Navy) and Safdar (Punjab). Bronze.

60  kgs:  Shahid Jan (KPT) bt Sahib Khan (Wapda)  22-17. Hayatullah (Balochistan) and Imran Khan (Army) Bronze.

64 kgs:  Asghar  Ali Shah (KPT) bt Sher Khan (Army)  23-6.   Khawaja Adnan (Railways) and Jan Muhammad (Sindh). Bronze.

69 kgs: Naseer Ahmed (Army) bt Javed Jan (KESC) 25-8. Dur Muhammad (Sindh) and Allah Bakhsh (Navy) Bronze.

75kgs:  Saeed Ahmad (Army) bt Manzoor Ahmed (KPT)  20-17. Abdul Waheed (Navy) and Rashid Minhas (PAF) Bronze.

81 kgs: Ahmad Ali (Army) bt Muzzamil (Punjab) RSC. Tanveer Butt (Wapda) and Muhammad Shafique (PAF). Bronze.

91  kgs: Shaukat Ali (Army) bt Shujah Abbas (Wapda) 25-6. Muhammad Hanif (PAF) and Pukar Khan (Balochistan) Bronze.

Above  91 kgs: Muzaffar Iqbal (Wapda) bt Riaz  Kansi  (Balochistan) 23-3. Abdul Razzaq (Army) and Muhammad Qasim (PAF) Bronze.
