SHIKARPUR, Jan 15: Faiz Mohammad Mahar of the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) and Abid Hussain Jatoi of the National Alliance on Wednesday won the by-elections on the provincial assembly seats from PS-10 (Lakhi Ghulam Shah, Shikarpur) and PS-12 (Khanpur, Shikarpur), respectively.
The two seats were vacated by the PML-Q MNA Ghaus Bakhsh Khan Mahar and MNA Dr Mohammad Ibrahim Jatoi of the National Alliance, respectively.
Two of the main contestants — Abdul Qadeer Chachar (PS-10) and Osaid (PS-12) Ahmed Soomro, both of the PPP, had announced their decision to boycott the by-elections on Tuesday.
Both of the PPP candidates had blamed the government for insecurity besides accusing the government of appointing police officials in accordance with the wishes of their rivals.
The polling at both the constituencies was marred by a low voters’ turnout following the PPP’s boycott.
DADU: The candidate of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q, Ihsan Ali Jatoi, on Wednesday won the by-election on the provincial assembly seat of PS-76.
He is the younger brother of the federal minister for industries, Liaquat Ali Jatoi.
The voting was held in a peaceful manner and no untoward incident was reported from any of the polling station set up in Khairpur Nathan Shah taluka.
Following the boycott, announced by the People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPP), three independent candidates — Dr Asad Leghari, Mohammad Amin Jamali and Ali Asghar Jatoi — were in the run for the provincial assembly seat.
The voter’s turnout remained between 15 to 20 per cent because of the PPP’s boycott and many of the polling stations presented a deserted look.
Rangers and police contingents were deployed at the polling stations to avoid any law and order situation.
The federal minister for industries, Liaquat Ali Jatoi, the DCO, Allah Dito Shar, the DPO, Ali Akbar Bhangwar, and the district and sessions judge, Hassan Feroze, supervised the polling arrangements here.
