KARACHI, Jan 14: Asim Kamal stroked an undefeated career-best 164 to help Karachi Whites pile up 310 for four in their first innings on the opening day of Quaid-i-Azam Trophy Group-II fixture here on Tuesday.

Karachi Whites, who must win to qualify for the last 16 stage, were well served by the left-handed Asim, who made an unbeaten 104 against Multan in the last game, after Dadu skipper Shahid Qambrani chose to field first in this inaugural first-class match at the picturesque Quaid-i-Azam Cricket Park.

The home team got a rude shock early on when its captain Maisam Hasnain fell in the second over of the morning to Akhtar Bangash for only one.

However, Asif Zakir, the other opener playing in his second match at this level, and Asim then came together in a second-wicket stand worth 181. Asif was out after making 79 off 160 deliveries. He hit five boundaries.

Mohammad Masroor lasted 17 balls but failed to open his account when he was caught by Shahnawaz off leg-spinner Rizwan Ahmed.

Fahadullah also fell cheaply. He made only seven while adding 50 for the fourth-wicket with Asim.

Iqbal Shaikh then joined Asim in the unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 62. Iqbal is batting on 30.

But the day belonged to Asim, who has so far negotiated 219 balls and struck 21 fours in this his eighth first-class century.

Pak PWD, meanwhile, made a sluggish start against Allied Bank at UBL Sports Complex. After winning the toss, PWD reached 234 for six at stumps with Saad Wasim still at the crease on 63.

Multan were 154 for four after the start of their game against Bahawalpur was delayed by 90 minutes because of fog at Multan Cricket Stadium.

The hosts, who were sent in, lost four early wickets for 48 runs but then prospered through Mohammad Ali Rafi (53) and Shahid Hameed (51) in the unfinished fifth-wicket stand of 106.

Bahawalpur’s off-spinner Maqbool Hussain captured three for 26 in 17 overs.
