PESHAWAR, Jan 14: The future of 92 students of Cecos University hangs in the balance as the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) has not yet registered the old students.

Speaking at a new conference at Peshawar Press Club here on Tuesday, Munir Hussain, leader of the 92-student action committee, said that they got admission to Cecos College of Engineering in 1996, which was affiliated with Al-Khair University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir University.

In 2001, the Cecos College of Engineering was upgraded and given a status of university. The Cecos University administration also ended its affiliation with Al-Khair University in the same year, Munir said.

He said that the NWFP government also recognized the university and the credits and documents of old students registered with the Al-Khair University was transferred to Cecos University.

The Cecos administration in Oct 2000 invited a PEC team for inspection, but was denied affiliation after finding out that student facilities were not up to the mark, he said.

The team asked the university administration to improve the facilities and again apply for affiliation, he maintained.

On April 17 last year, a PEC team again visited Cecos University and after seeing improvement in the facilities gave affiliation to the university, but registered only new students.

Criticizing the PEC decision, the students action committee has demanded of the government to solve the issue and order the PEC administration to register the old students of Cecos University immediately.
