Ashraf propels Wapda past POF

LAHORE, Jan 13: Mohammad Ashraf’s hat trick helped Wapda rout Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) 6-1 in the 50th national hockey championship departmental qualifying round at National Hockey Stadium on Monday.

Ashraf opened Wapda’s account in the 16th minute and doubled the lead ten minutes later.

POF scored their consolation goal through captain Shafiqul Islam in the 41st minute. Ashraf was on target again as he pumped in three more in the 45th, 49th and the 51st minute to complete his hat trick. Rehan Butt chipped in with 62nd-minute effort to make it 6-1.

Habib Bank (HBL) breezed past Customs 9-0 in a match which was marred by rough play and misconduct from Customs, especially in the first half.

A rising hit from HBL just yards away from the circle angered Customs defenders Danish Kaleem and Waseem who allegedly used abusive language but surprisingly umpire Faiz Ahmad Faizi did not take any action.

Minutes later, HBL’s Kashif Jawwad could barely save himself from Waseem’s swinging stick which resulted in a green card to Customs player.

HBL took lead through Kashif in the second minute. Qavi Khan increased the lead with a 12th-minute. Rizwan Khan made it 3-0 in the 16th minute, Sameer Hussain struck in the 24th minute, while Haider Hussain fired in two minutes before the break.

The bankers got their sixth in the 39th minute through Mohammad Khalid, Rao Waheed slammed home in the 51st minute before Kashif added another in the 56th minute.

HBL scored their last goal in the dying moments of the game when Ejaz Rasool found the cage to complete the tally.

Army overpowered Pakistan Air Force (PAF) 3-1. The airmen took the lead through Kashif Raza in the 26th  minute but soldiers retaliated, scoring three goals in a row.

Saeed Ahmad equalised in the  31st minute, Shakeel Ahmad made it 2-1 in the 59th minute, while Mohammad Irfan struck in the 65th minute.

Four goals from Mohammad Sarwar and three by Zahid Afzal enabled Allied Bank (ABL) to rout University Grants Commission 11-1.

The bankers took an early lead through Mohammad Sarfraz in the 2nd minute while Aleem Raza made it 2-0 in the 10th minute. Two minutes later, Sarwar converted a short corner. Zahid found the net in the 14th minute while Sarwar scored his second in the 21st minute.

The bankers put more pressure after resumption as Zahid scored his second in the 39th minute, Sarwar got his third in the very next minute followed by another one from Zahid in the 45th minute.

UGC scored their solitary goal in the 56th minute through Asif Hashmi, while ABL added three more in six minutes. Sarwar slammed home in the 59th minute followed by Mohammad Saqlain (63rd minute) and Aleem Raza goals (65th minute).

Two goals each from Kamran Ashraf, Ali Raza and Mohammad Farooq helped PIA crush Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) 9-0.

PIA, who failed to impress in their first match against Railways which they won by a narrow margin of 3-2, led the first half 5-0.

Skipper Kamran banged home in the 3rd minute, Ali fired home two minutes later off a penalty corner, Atif Bashir scored on an indirect try in the 16th minute, Ali again struck two minutes later, while Kamran was on target in the 28th minute.

Mohammad Usman got the sixth in the 39th minute, Mohammad Tariq made it 7-0 in the 48th minute before Mohammad Farooq found the cage (52nd and 60th minute) to seal the fate of the match.

Three goals by Shakeel Abbasi enabled Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) outclass Pakistan Navy 6-1.

Aqeel Hussain netted the first for PTCL in the 5th minute, Navy scored their consolation goal when Jameel Khan found the target in the 6th minute, Shakeel scored his first in the in the 21st minute.

PTCL scored their third through Saleem Khalid in the 50th minute and fourth through Naeem Khan eight minutes later. Shakeel scored two more in the 68th and 69th minutes to complete the tally.
