HYDERABAD, Jan 13: The workers of Ansari Sugar Mills, Badin district, staged a demonstration here on Monday against an attack on labour leader Saleem Khaskheli by the factory technical manager.
The protesters raised slogans against the technical manager of the mill, Aurangzeb, and demanded his arrest.
Speaking at the rally, held outside the local press club, Mohammad Rafiq Memon and others alleged that Aurangzeb had tried to kill Khaskheli for raising voice for the rights of the workers.
They deplored that despite the registration of a case against Aurangzeb, he had not been arrested, and demanded his immediate. arrest.
They also demanded that two-year bonus of the workers should be paid and they should be provided protection against the alleged highhandedness of the mill management.
WAPDA UNION: The president, Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union, Abdul Nizamani, has called upon Wapda employees to unite to face the repressive steps, taken by the Wapda authorities against them.
He was speaking at a meeting of the workers of Lakhra, Jamshoro and Kotri power stations at the Labour Hall here on Monday.
He said that the employees were being sent on forced retirement, they were being transferred to far-flung areas on minor complaints, their generation and hardship allowance had been withdrawn and increments were being deducted from their salaries.
He said that new methods were being introduced to exploit the workers and added that if the workers were to unite, no one could deprive them of their rights.
He condemned the arrest of the union leader, Qurban Jatoi, and confiscation of his property, without providing him an opportunity to defend himself.
He also severely criticised the Industrial Relations Ordinance 2002 and Presidential Ordinance 2000 and warned that if the problems of the workers were not resolved, the scope of their protest would be extended to the entire country.
