Defence Academy on song for another win

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, Jan 11: Defence Academy, a three-year-old chestnut colt from He Man out of Victoria Garden, is on song to triumph once again, when the Winter Gymkhana Meeting gets underway on Sunday at the Karachi Racecourse.

Participating in the fourth race in a big field of 15 runners, Defence Academy after his fluent victory under jockey Shahzad a little over three weeks ago, should pass the winning post ahead of the bay Mark, with Prism Of Life picking up the third spot.

All in all, seven races have been chalked out on the racing programme.

The first six races will be held over the sprinting distance of five furlongs, while the last race will be contested by 11 runners going over six.

The first race begins at 12-30 p.m.

In the opener, the bay Century, although carrying a heavy impost of 9-4 on his back, has the speed to overcome the likes of Miss Neutron and Sharoz-e-Sehar.

Rich Valiant is fancied in our columns to get the better of another speedy customer Lightening Arrow and Present Will, in the following event.

Four days ago, Even Top under riding boy Bashir Karim finished a disappointing fourth after being left in the far distance when the race began.

With a good lad astride, Even Top should pass the winning post ahead of Sarafan and Reasonable.

Only a week ago, the bay gelding Just In Fun with jockey M. Yousuf in the saddle, beat Reincarnated and Shah Rose without breaking into a sweat.

If the gelding produces that same run, Just In Fun should register another victory for owner Mohammad Yousuf and trainer Mehboob, with Cute Lady and Recent Command chasing the winner throughout the race.

The chestnut Aziz Love has finished second and then third in his last two starts piloted by riding boy Kashif Ali.

However, if all goes well on Sunday, Aziz Love could win the sixth race of the afternoon after a keen tussle with Champion Lady and Sapno Ki Rani, throttled throughout the race by riding boy Naveed a week ago. However, no action was taken against the rider.

In the last race on the afternoon’s programme the thoroughbred chestnut filly Jugni after her fine victory last week with jockey Tariq Mehmood in the saddle, should make it two wins in a row for owner M.R. Hussain and trainer M. Pervaiz.

Jugni should be followed home by the lion hearted Donatello, with Lover’s Way grabbing the third spot.
