MULTAN, Jan 11: The annual elections of the district bar associations were held across the Punjab on Saturday.
Sheikh Jamshed Hayat has been elected president of the Multan district bar association.
He secured 708 votes against his opponents Malik Irshad Rasool who polled 588 votes and Mirza Furrukh Aftab nine votes.
Chaudhry Muhammad Ashraf was elected senior vice-president, Mukhtiar Ahmed Niazi secretary-general, Kamran Sohail joint secretary and Muhammad finance secretary.
Ahmed Babar Sukarno, Zawar Hussain Mohota and Tayyab Ghauri had already been elected unopposed vice-president, library secretary and auditor, respectively.
OKARA: The penal backed by the PML-Q and a group of independent young lawyers led by Chaudhry Ikramul Haq and Rana Ikram Rabbani made a clean sweep.
For the president office, Shaikh Najamus Saqib bagged 241 votes while his opponent Chaudhry Anwarul Haq secured 185 votes. Rai Arshad Raza was elected senior vice-president, Naeemullah Chaudhry vice-president, Amjad Pervez Chaudhry secretary-general and Mirza Zulfikar Ali finance secretary.
Ziaur Rehman advocate and Syed Muzaffar Hassan Gillani were elected unopposed joint secretary and library secretary, respectively.
GUJRANWALA: PPP backed Ilyas Hussain Rehan was elected president by clinching 515 votes.
Ashiq Aasi was elected senior vice-president, Burhanuddin vice-president, PPP-supported Muhammad Saeed Bhutta secretary-general, Mian Ahad joint secretary, Abdul Jabbar Kashmiri finance secretary, Farzand Ali Cheema library secretary and Mian Zahid Nazir auditor.
At least 55 lawyers filed their nomination papers for the membership of the executive council. Those elected executive council members are: Sheikh Ghulam Sarwer Hashmi, Yawer Mehdi Naqvi, Muhammad Hanif Dar, Shahzad Hassan Bhatti, Qamer Al-Sidiq Sohail, Saeedul Zaman, Zakaullah Warraich, Muhammad Jamil Rana, Muhammad Saeed Hinjra and Shazia Gulzar.
SARGODHA: Muhammad Afzal Farooka backed by the defunct Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) has been elected president by defeating Syed Ghulam Abbas Shah.
Sheikh Imtiaz Ahmed has been elected secretary-general.
KASUR: Sardar Qurban Ali Dogar was elected president, Asim Nawaz Khan vice-president, Bilal Chaudhry secretary-general, Ahsan Yaqoob Mehar joint secretary and Afzal Shahid finance secretary. While Ali Akbar Sindhu was elected unopposed library secretary and Amjad Ali Chaudhry unopposed auditor.
A 10-member executive body was also elected. The elections were supervized by election committee chairman Chaudhry Muhammad Nawaz advocate.
GUJRAT: Chaudhry Nisar Ahmad of the Jamaat-i-Islami was elected president by defeating PML-Q backed candidate Asghar Ali Ghurral, father of MPA Khalid Ghurral.
Chaudhry Safdar Hanjra was elected vice-president after beating his rival candidate Shafqatullah Butt with a wide margin.
Chaudhry Asif Bashir Korotana was elected secretary-general, Muneeb Tahir joint secretary.
Sources said provincial Education Minister Mian Imran Masood and Gujrat tehsil Nazim Mian Haroon Masood had been canvassing for Asghar Ali Ghurral. The newly-elected president, Nisar Ahmad, had been offered a lucrative post in the Law Department by an influential political family on the condition of his withdrawal in favour of Asghar Ghurral.
SAHIWAL: Malik Fazal Karim was elected president by securing 356 votes. His opponent Iftikhar Khawar got 272 votes.
Rana Muhammad Hassan Sukhera was elected vice-president and Faisal Nouman secretary-general.
CHINIOT: Mazhar Hussain Shah has been elected president of the Chiniot bar association by defeating Mehr Mazhar Haral.
Asad Nisar Bhatti had already been elected unopposed secretary-general.
