By Our Correspondent
UNITED NATIONS, Jan 10: A large number of the United Nations Security Council members on Thursday expressed their solidarity with Pakistan’s Ambassador Munir Akram over the issue of the lifting of his diplomatic immunity sought by the United States.
The intervention was sought by the US State Department on the reference of New York’s District attorney’s office which wanted to prosecute Mr Akram over a phone call made by a woman friend to the police department on Dec 10.
The woman, Marijana Mihic, a Croatian immigrant has since not filed a formal complaint and has pleaded with the New York DA’s office to drop the case.
In conversations with Ambassador Akram the UN envoys reportedly termed the case being “outrageous” invasion of his privacy maintained that it was unprecedented for the New York District Attorney to blow up such a trivial matter into an issue.
