ARD writes to Bush

LAHORE, Jan 10: ARD deputy information secretary Munir Ahmad Khan on Friday sent a letter to US President Bush drawing his attention to the discrimination the Pakistanis in America were being subjected to.

He explained the role played by Pakistan in the war against terrorism and the way it had condemned attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.

The ARD leader said it would be unrealistic to treat the government of a country as a friend and its people adversary. The treatment being meted out to the Pakistanis in various areas has forced them to contemplate winding up of their business in the US, he said.

To maintain friendly ties at the government and peoples level, Mr Khan said, the US should review its decision of subjecting the Pakistanis to harsh and humiliating procedure of registration with INS.

He said while the US had the right to take effective security measures after the Sept 11 attacks, they should not appear to be discriminatory.

He said Pakistani people were law abiding and peace loving and even US officials had admitted that they had made immense contribution to the American society. No Pakistani, he said, had anything to do with terrorist activities in the US.
