Eleven die in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Jan 4: Eight Kashmiri militants, two Indian border guards and a policeman were killed in shoot-outs in Indian-occupied Kashmir, police said on Saturday.

Two militants and two Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were killed and another BSF guard injured in a clash in Gool area, a spokesman said.

The gunbattle occurred after the Indian guards fanned out to track down militants who had detonated a time-bomb, the spokesman said.

Two other militants were killed on Saturday in the central Pulwama district, the BSF said.

Three militants were killed in the Budgam district on Saturday, while security forces shot dead another militant overnight in Kupwara.

Meanwhile, militants killed a Muslim police inspector, Bashir Ahmed, late on Friday near Bijbehara, 40 kilometres south of Srinagar, police said.—AFP
