Fly To The Sky starts off as day’s best

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, Jan 4: Fly To The Sky, a three-year-old bay filly, starts off as our day’s best, when the Winter Gymkhana Meeting gets under way at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

The Nearest ‘n’ Dearest - Get on With U sibling is owned by M. Ateeq and finished third under jockey Ashiq Ali, behind that wonder colt Raqeeb-e-Azam and Hoor-e-Mehran in the 2000 Guineas of Pakistan, contested by eight highly bred colts and fillies going over the mile 11 days ago.

Running in the sixth race over six furlongs, Fly To The Sky has the credentials to pass the winning post ahead of stable companion Champion Strides and Lover’s Way.

All in all, seven events have been drawn up on the racing programme. The first four will be going over the sprinting distance of five furlongs, while the next three will be contested over six.

The first race begins at 12-30 p.m.

Also on the card is the X’Mas and New Year Cup all rolled in one, which will see 11 three-year-old colts and fillies vying for the top honours going over five furlongs in the fifth race.

Since all the runners are maidens at the time of starting, and none of them have done something worthwhile in the morning exercises, it would rather unfair to our readers if a wrong animal is predicted in our column in that race.

The opener has 18 runners vying for the spoils going over five furlongs. Just in Fun is fancied to win this race from Shahrose and One Touch.

The next race with 15 runners in contentions should see the three-year -old bay colt Power Plus sprinting past the winning post ahead of Order Of The Day and Sher Zai.

Less than two weeks ago, the eight-year-old bay mare Rashmee ran a splendid race beating nearest rival Power Plus by 11 and half lengths, sprinting over six furlongs. If she produces that same run, Rashmee could score another triumph for owner Kanwal Amir and champion trainer Taj Mohammad in the next event. Golden Voice should bag the second spot from Snake Eyed.

Also on song to triumph again is owner-trainer M. Yaqoob Butt’s three- year-old bay colt Wonder Thunder, with the game Donatello and Love Land joining the fray in fourth race of the afternoon.

The thoroughbred bay colt the New Champion is working well in the morning workouts and if ticking, should land owner M. Ateeq with another winner in the concluding event, with My Freedom , Dur-e-Yamen and stable companion Navahoo Princess completing the frame.

All said and done, an interesting afternoon awaits the racing fans.
