Consistent Hai takes five-shot advantage

KARACHI, Jan 3: Muhammad Ali Hai maintained the lead in the Shell Third Sindh Amateur Golf Championship, carding another round of one under 71, to go two under par at 142 to take five strokes lead over Islamabad’s Tariq Mehmood on the second day (75+74), at the Karachi Golf Club on Friday.

Tied in the third spot was Murtaza Qasim (77+74) and Asad I.A. Khan (75+76) at 151.

Although the course was more difficult to play on as compared to the opening day, some good scores were carded particularly by Ali Hai with 71, Tariq Mehmood 72 and Murtaza Qasim 74. Asad I.A. Khan, Waseem Rana and Karat Hussain also played some steady rounds, with the gusty winds blowing throughout the day.

Asad, led Hai by one stroke in the net category, closely followed by Kim Dae Nam and Samsam Qadir at 142 and Zia Hai and Tariq at 143.

The best net of the day went to the Korean golfer Nam, who shot a personal best of 67.

The Ladies event included several foreigners, strutting about the course in their respective colourful attire.

Karachi’s Saba Iqbal came out on top with a gross score of 85, late in the evening session.

Earlier, the veterans title was picked up by Tahir Karamat with a score of 80.

Omair Javed retained the Sindh Junior championship title when both categories concluded on Friday. Sibtain Haji finished off as runner-up.

In the Juniors under-15 Hassan Kassam with scores of 83+84 beat Hamza Haroon for the title.

On the first day of the seniors championship, defending champion Haroon Kahlon led the field with a gross score of 75.

He was followed by world famous bridge player Zia Mehmood, now trying his hand in golf, who carded a gross score of 79.

Close on Zia’s heels was Aslam R. Khan, and former Test cricketer Zaheer Abbas, who both finished in rough conditions with a gross score of 80.

Zafar Ahmed Khan was leading the Senior net with a score of 69.

On Saturday, the championship will conclude with the Amateurs and Seniors events to be continued.
