ISLAMABAD, Jan 2: Champions Army were given their first tough test of the 38th National Volleyball Championship by Police Thursday but still won 3-2 to advance to the semifinals.

Police also went through as did Wapda and POF at the end of the quarterfinals league that concluded at the Gymnasium in Wah.

Army who had not dropped a set going into the Police match, surrendered that record with their 19-25, 25-22, 25-10, 22-25, 15-11 win.

Wapda defeated PAF in straight sets 25-19, 25-12, 27-25 sailing through because of the good work done by Rahim, Shahid and Irfan.

In another match, a five setter, NWFP scored a 25-17, 25-22, 20-25, 23-25, 15-8 win over Punjab.

Punjab put up a brave fight bouncing back from two sets down but in the end, NWFP showed good command to snatch a hard-fought victory.

A young POF side meanwhile downed an experienced Navy 25-19, 25-22, 25-19 thanks to the efforts of Saadi Ahmed, Ehsan, Liaquat, Sajjad and Zaheer.

Today’s semifinals: Army v Wapda; POF v Police.
