LAHORE, Jan 1: The committee constituted to work out modalities of the proposed merger of FIA’s crime and economic crime wings with the NAB has yet to complete the task.

The five-member committee, constituted by the Musharraf government’s federal cabinet on Sept 20, was given Dec 25 deadline. Its members could hold one meeting since then because of their other ‘official’ engagements. They are now expected to meet within the next 15 days.

The situation is not only causing insecurity among the employees of FIA’s crime and economic wings but also affecting their working.

Official sources told Dawn on Wednesday that the committee members had failed to evolve a consensus on how to merge the departments into NAB during their meeting.

Headed by a senior officer of the establishment division, the committee comprises one official each from the law and finance departments, the NAB and the FIA.

The list of the economic and crime wings employees posted at the FIA sub-offices had been finalized and sent to the head office.

Out of 54 employees of FIA’s crime and economic crime wings of Lahore office have consented to join the NAB on deputation while the rest on permanent basis. Those who will not be adjusted in the NAB go to the surplus pool of the establishment division for absorption in other government departments.

The committee will also decide the fate of the pending cases of the FIA crime and economic crimes wings.
