KHAIRPUR, Dec 30: Seven women were recovered from the Autaq of a landlord near the Baharo police post, Gambat, by a raid commissioner on Saturday.

The Khairpur district and sessions judge, Nisar Mohammad Shaikh, had appointed Shafi Mohammad Siddiqui for the raid.

Naseem Ahmad of the Kara Khan Kalhoro village had submitted an application, saying the Baharo police post had illegally detained seven women and six minor children of the Kalhoro tribe.

The in charge of the police post, Abdul Munam Larik, appeared before the district and sessions judge on Monday and told the court no member of the Kalhoro tribe had been arrested or was wanted in any case.

The recovered women — Sukhan, Bakhtawar, Shahida, Ameena, Nazeeran, Arbab Khatoon and Azizan —, who were also present in the court, told the judge they were arrested along with their children by the police on Dec 18.

They said the police kept them at the Autaq in daytime and at night, they were kept at a police lock-up. They told the court two women were still in the police custody.

The sessions judge directed the in charge of the police post to appear before the court along with the two detained women on Jan 11.

RAIN: A sudden burst of rainfall brought with it a cold wave in Upper Sindh on Monday. Not only that but even the power to all the towns of Khairpur district was cut off.

The rain damaged the telephone lines in some areas.

The growers seemed to be hopeful that several crops including banana, wheat, sugarcane, and dates would benefit from the rain.

It was still raining when this report was being filed.

DEMO: Passengers, who usually travel by the Sukkur Express from Khairpur to Karachi, held a protest demonstration outside the press club on Monday against the Pakistan Railways (PR) for causing them inconvenience at all times.

The Sukkur Express is the only suitable train for the passengers of Khairpur and a carriage is supposed to be reserved for them from Khairpur. But according to the passengers, they have to face a lot of inconvenience as the carriage is never affixed to the train at Khairpur but anywhere on the route.

The passengers are never informed in advance as to where the carriage would be affixed.
