Jirga to resolve tobacco issues

By Our Correspondent

SWABI, Dec 30: Senior provincial minister, Sirajul Haq, has said that soon a jirga would be formed to hold talks with the officials of Pakistan Tobacco Board and other tobacco purchasing companies about the problems facing the tobacco growers in the district.

The jirga would also discuss the tobacco quota slashed by the companies for 2003 and seek solution of other problems as well, he said while speaking at the Rabita programme of Abaseen Union of Journalists on Sunday night.

“The jirga would comprise MNAs, MPAs and growers of the tobacco cultivating areas, who would also be joined by the provincial government officials when it holds talks with the PTB officials and representatives of the companies,” he said.

The parliamentarians elected from the tobacco growing areas are aware of the problems of the growers and their leaders would also join the jirga to find out a durable solution to the problem, he said.

He conceded that after the closure of five purchasing centres by the Pakistan Tobacco Company and Lakson Tobacco Company, some agreements had got rescinded, creating more trouble for the growers.

He said the matter of slashing of tobacco quota and tearing up of agreements would be resolved amicably when the three-way talks are held. He said that no one would be allowed to victimize the poor growers.
