KARACHI: Court notice to govt in encroachment case
KARACHI, Dec 30: A division bench of the Sindh High Court issued on Monday notices to the City Nazim, MD of the KWSB, SHO Quaidabad and other respondents for Jan 10.
The bench comprised Justice Shabbir Ahmed and Justice S. Ali Aslam Jafri.
The court was hearing a constitutional petition filed by Bakht Rawan, Abdul Sattar and Mohammed Waheed, all residents of Majeed Colony, Landhi Town, challenging encroachment on 500 square yards of KWSB (now water and sanitation department of the city government) land reserved for expansion of a water pumping station.
The petitioners maintained that the Karachi Development Authority had reserved four plots of 240 square yards each for the construction of a water pumping station. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board built its facilities on 500 square yards and the rest was reserved for future expansion.
The petitioners maintained that Gul Nabi Shah, general councillor from the union council, also a resident of Majeed Colony, began construction on the said amenity plot/land from November.
They maintained that they contacted different authorities, including the City Nazim, DCO Karachi, MD KWSB, TPO Landhi Town, SHO Quaidabad, but no action was taken to stop the encroachment.
After hearing counsel for the petitioner, the court issued notices to the advocate-general and the respondents for Jan 10.
REMANDED: Justice Shabbir Ahmed of the Sindh High Court, who is also the administrative judge of the anti-terrorism courts at Karachi, remanded on Monday two accused in a kidnapping for ransom case in judicial custody till Jan 6 while directing police to file challan on the next date of hearing.
The case pertains to the kidnapping of a 19-year-old student, Mohammed Abid, on Dec 22 in the police limits of Shah Faisal. The accused demanded a Rs20,000 ransom from the hostage’s family for his release.
Another bench of the SHC, comprising Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Justice Mohammed Mujeebullah Siddiqui, issued notice to deputy prosecutor-general of the Regional Accountability Bureau for Jan 3 on an appeal filed by former DSP Jameel Akhtar Kiyani.
He challenged proceedings against him before an accountability court at Karachi.—APP
