KARACHI: Educational institutes told to improve performance

KARACHI, Dec 28: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan on Saturday asked public educational institutions to enhance their standard of education so that people from poor segments of society could also get their children properly educated.

“Although private schools and educational institutes have filled the gap in provision of educational facilities to some extent, they have been turned into an industry,” he said at an award distribution ceremony for students and teachers, organized by Iqra Welfare Education Trust in collaboration with the Sindh education department.

The Nazim said that when the city government was established, students in many schools were forced to get education in classes held under trees, whereas some of public schools lacked even washroom and toilet facilities.

“Due to the dilapidated conditions of public educational institutes, schools, colleges and varsities were established in public sector which filled the gap in provision of education,” he maintained.

“However, now private educational institutes have become a money-making industry and instead of promoting education, their owners are minting money,” he added.

“We are trying to repair school buildings, provide basic educational facilities at these institutions and create an educational atmosphere in the city,” he said, adding that now it was incumbent upon teachers to enhance standard of these educational institutes and provide quality education to students.

“Of course, provision of required funds, basic facilities and establishment of buildings is the responsibility of the state. But provision of quality education is certainly the responsibility of the teachers,” he said and urged both students and teachers to work efficiently and with dedication.

Naimatullah Khan said that keeping the hardships of citizens in view, the city government had decided to spend a major chunk of its budget on education. He said educational institutions had been repaired and efforts made to create an academic environment.

He lamented that “we still stood in the ranks of backward nations even after 56 years of independence and the only reason for this was our educational backwardness.” He said no nation could progress unless its education sector was developed.

The City Nazim advised teachers and students to work hard with honesty for the betterment of the country as well as for the coming generation who are the future builders of Pakistan.

He said teachers and students should be provided with a creative and healthy environment for gaining satisfactory results.

Later, the City Nazim distributed prizes and shields among students and teachers who performed extraordinarily in their fields.

Executive District Officer (education) Prof Raees Alvi said they were making efforts to enhance the quality and standard of education in public educational institutes and in the first step, students and teachers had been asked to be regular and punctual.

“We have made 70 per cent attendance mandatory for appearing in the exams,” he said and added that they were trying to raise the ratio up to 100 per cent.

He said, “We have achieved 100 per cent attendance both in students and teachers and special teams have been formed to check the attendance.”

The EDO said that the city government’s target was to achieve 100 per cent enrolment in all the schools, which has been gained, and the second step was to provide quality education which is necessary for the future of our students.

SURPRISE VISIT: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan paid a surprise visit to areas around Bukhari and Yakub Masajid in Kharadar on Friday and reviewed the sanitary conditions.

During his visit to the Karachi Chamber on Thursday, the businessmen had complained about stagnant rainwater in the areas.

The Nazim expressed displeasure over insanitary conditions and directed the staff to clean the area within one day.

The people of the area complained to the Nazim that when they approached the office of the Town Nazim to register their complaints, the staff declined to receive it.

Naimatullah Khan assured the people that he would soon visit the area again along with the Town officials to see whether his orders were being complied with or not.

He told the people that action would be taken against those officials who showed negligence towards resolving public problems.—PPI/APP
