KARACHI: Scientists urged to help promote world peace
KARACHI, Dec 27: Karachi Nazim Naimatullah Khan has made a fervent appeal to the scientists around the world to use science and technology in the 21st century for fostering peace and the betterment of humanity.
He stated this while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural session of the International Multi-Topic Conference in a local hotel on Friday.
The two-day moot is being organized by the Karachi Institute of Information Technology (KIIT) in collaboration with the IEEE Communications Society, and the Computer Society of Pakistan.
“Today from this platform I appeal as the Nazim (administrator) of Karachi, the sixth largest city in the world, to the scientists around the world to use science and technology for fostering peace and betterment of humanity,” Mr Khan said.
He said he hoped that the 21st century would be a century of peace and the one for the betterment of humanity.
The Nazim regretted that in the 20th century the advancement of science and technology did not do any thing for the humanity at large.
He also referred to the two world wars as well as the development of the atomic bombs.
Naimatullah Khan said that Karachi, the largest industrial city of the country with the highest literacy rate, had also made great contributions in the field of information technology.
“Our government is taking constructive steps for the progress and promotion of IT throughout the city.”
He also lauded the role being played by former senator Syed Mahar Ali 0towards fulfilling the government’s vision for a better Pakistan.
Naimatullah also praised the contributions of KIIT towards the development in the field of IT.
He said the phenomenal growth of IT in the world in general and countries such as Pakistan in particular would encourage academic activities around the globe.
The Nazim said there was a great demand for research in this very area in which Pakistan at present lags behind. He said he believed that Karachi had the potential to take an initiative in this regard.—APP
