Oram guides Kiwis to tense victory

AUCKLAND, Dec 26: Jacob Oram led New Zealand with bat and ball to a nerve-tingling three-wicket victory in the first One-day International against India on Thursday after his side ran into big trouble chasing a modest 109 to win.

It was the second time in a week that Oram had to nurse New Zealand to a victory total, having been there at the end when the home side won the second Test in Hamilton last Sunday.

Earlier, he took five wickets as India crashed to 108 all out.

Oram (27) was joined by Kyle Mills (21) and then Daniel Vettori (5no) in rescuing the New Zealand cause after Javagal Srinath and Ashish Nehra had reduced them to 52 for six in the 19th over.

Earlier, India crumbled to 108 all out, with Oram taking five for 26.

Oram ripped through the core of India’s batting order to put New Zealand in control, taking two wickets in his third over and a further two in his fifth.

He followed that up with another in his sixth as India were unable to cope with his accurate bowling.

Oram’s first victim was Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, who continued his wretched form on the tour when he was bowled, playing on from an inside edge.

Ganguly made 14 and had just begun to open his shoulders when his dismissal came.

Oram wasted little time in notching up a five-wicket haul when Srinath was caught by Mathew Sinclair at third slip for nought in Oram’s next over.
