Defence ties with Iran to be boosted

RAWALPINDI, Dec 24: Pakistan and Iran on Tuesday agreed to enhance cooperation in defence and exchange delegations to identify the areas where they could benefit from each other’s experience and expertise.

According to a press release issued by the defence ministry, the decisions were taken when Iranian Defence Minister Vice-Admiral Ali Shamkhani called on his counterpart, Rao Sikandar Iqbal, in his office.

The minister is visiting the country with President Syed Mohammad Khatami.

The ministers maintained that there was great potential on both sides which could be utilized for the benefit of the countries.

Sikandar Iqbal said the countries enjoyed a special relationship marked by same culture, faith and common heritage. He said the visit by President Khatami would bring the countries closer.

Vice-Admiral Shamkhani congratulated the minister on assumption of office and invited him to Iran. Defence Secretary Hamid Nawaz Khan was also present.
