Protest against doctor’s arrest

SIALKOT, Dec 22: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) and Pakistan Medical Association’s (PMA) district chapter have strongly protested against the arrest of Dr Ahmad Javaid Khawaja and his family members by the American Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Lahore.

Separate press released of the MMA and the PMA revealed that the two organizations had arranged meetings in Sialkot, Sambrial, Daska and Pasrur, where resolutions were passed to express concern over the “atrocities” of the FBI in Pakistan. They termed FBI’s operations in Pakistan a danger to country’s sovereignty and national solidarity.

Both the organizations demanded immediate release of the detained doctor and his family members.

The MMA also urged the government to keep the FBI away from internal affairs of the country.

PO DEAD: A proclaimed offender (PO) was shot dead by some unknown person at Thakra Mahay village in Daska Tehsil late Saturday night.

Police said the body of Asad alias Asadu was found near local farmer Sharif Ahmad’s place (dera) early Sunday morning. The Begowala police have registered a case with no clue as to the identity of the accused.

Mr Asad was wanted by the police in various murder cases.

DACOITIES: Four persons, including a woman, were injured seriously on offering resistance to armed dacoits in separate incidents on Saturday night, police said.

In Sambrial, an armed dacoit scaled the boundary wall of the house of a local trader, Nazir Ahmed, and made all the family hostage at gunpoint.

When the trader tried to put up resistance, the dacoit opened fire that left him and his wife Amina seriously injured.

The dacoit took away gold ornaments, cash, electronics and other valuables worth Rs200,000.

The injured were admitted to Daska Hospital in critical condition.

At Shadiwal village in Kotli Loharan, dacoits attacked industrial workers Sarfraz and Salamat with knives on facing resistance and fled away after looting thousands of rupees in cash at gunpoint.

At Mandranwala in Daska Sadar area, three unidentified armed dacoits deprived local landlord Ashfaq Hussain and his family of gold ornaments, cash, wrist watches and other valuables worth Rs300,000 here late Saturday night.
