India confirms participation: Asian Jr Squash

ISLAMABAD, Dec 19: The Pakistan team is set to take part in next month’s British Junior Squash Championship with a party of 12 players and four officials having been finalised.

A spokesman for the Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) said Thursday that the squad under coach Rehmat Khan was likely to leave on Dec 28. The championship runs between Jan 2-7 in Sheffield.

The contingent has three players who represented the country in the World Junior Championship in Chennai, a title that Pakistan won after two decades. Safeerullah and Khalid Atlas featured in that success while Shah Nawaz contested the individual event.

The team: Amir Khan, Adnan Khan (under-13), Alamzeb Khan Jnr, Zahir Shah, Farzan Rashid (under-15), Farhan Mahboob, Yasir Butt, Bilal Zaman (under-17), Safeerullah Khan, Khalid Atlas, Shah

Nawaz, Alamzeb Khan Snr (under-19). Rehmat Khan (chief coach), Naeem Khan, Ayaz Khan (assistant coaches), Wing Commander Sajid Waheed (manager).

Meanwhile, India have intimated the PSF that they will participate in this February’s Asian Junior Championship in Islamabad. Also having said ‘yes’ are Qatar, China, Malaysia, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Confirmation from other countries is still awaited.

Preparations for the Feb 1-9 championship are under way with six women players having been chosen from among which final four will be selected.

The selected players are: Bushra Haider (Sindh), Sarah Awan, Muqaddas Ashraf, Amina Najam, Alia Sarfraz, Saima Shaukat (Punjab). Maria Toor Pakay (NWFP, reserve).

The PSF has also named an organising committee for the championship with Air Vice Marshal Saleem A Nawaz as its head.
