First day proceedings washed out

HAMILTON (New Zealand), Dec 19: Not a ball was bowled on the opening day of the second and last cricket Test between India and New Zealand here on Thursday due to a soggy outfield following overnight rain.

Umpires Asoka de Silva (Sri Lanka) and Daryl Harper (Australia) inspected the ground conditions three times at the Westpac Park before ruling out the possibility of play.

A delayed start looked on the cards for Friday following afternoon showers.

New Zealand lead 1-0 in the two-Test series following their emphatic 10-wicket victory in the opening match at Wellington last week.

India will also play seven One-day Internationals against the hosts after the second Test.—AFP
