GUJRANWALA, Dec 19: Pakistan nationals languishing in Malta jail under the immigration act have sought help from the government for their early release.
A boat carrying 110 Pakistanis was captured by the Malta army and all of them aboard were sent to jail.
This was disclosed by 10 people of Naushera Virkan through a letter sent to their heirs from Malta jail.
With the connivance of immigration officials some cheats trapped unemployed youths for sending them to European countries. They allegedly received between Rs500,000 and Rs800,000 from each of candidate. Most of them paid the money to cheats after selling the jewellery and their houses.
From Libya they were boarded for Italy after changing their passports and photos some two weeks ago. But after drifting at sea, the boat entered the territory of Malta. The army patrolling the sea captured the boat and sent all the occupants to jail under the immigration act.
Heirs of the jailed youth have appealed to the government to arrange for their safe return from Malta. They have also demanded that the government should arrest the cheats and their agents who have established their network throughout the country.
It is learnt that Pakistan and Malta have no diplomatic relations.
REMANDED: The local Anti-Terrorism Court No 2 on Thursday extended physical remand for seven days of two accused brothers involved in the killing of PPP city president Chaudhry Khalid Humayun.
Accused Kashif and Asif are the sons of Haji Muhammad Siddiq, the president of the vegetable market commission agents association. They with the help of their accomplices had killed the PPP leader along with his guards over a murder enmity some three weeks ago. Later, they fled to Iran and were arrested by the border police when they returned.
INJURED: At least a dozen students and wagon crew were injured in a clash on the College Road here on Thursday.
Students stopped the wagon (E-5594) and beat up crew Arif Masih for not carrying them to their college. Seeing the miserable condition of the crew, passengers intervened but the students tried to beat them also. In retaliation, the passengers thrashed the students with clubs, fists and kicks. As a result, 11 students including Waqas, Zahid, Goraya, Asim, Zaigham, Naeem, Bilal, Wasim, Ali Zeb and Ashraf, sustained injuries. They were rushed to the local DHQ Hospital.
Police have registered a case against students, wagon crew and are investigating.
RECOVERED: The bailiff of a local court on Thursday recovered a milkman detained illegally in the lock-up of the Wazirabad Saddar police station.
Waqas Ahmad was produced before court where the additional and district sessions judge got him freed. Later, the SHO was summoned and the judge issued him a show-cause notice for keeping an innocent person into illegal confinement.
Police took Waqas into custody at the behest of his rivals.
SALARIES: Salaries to the Christian staff and sanitary workers will be paid before Christmas.
This assurance was held out by City tehsil council Nazim Babu Javed Ahmad to a delegation of the Christian staff and the sanitary workers at a meeting here on Thursday.
SHOT DEAD: A youth was shot dead by assailants on Thursday on suspicion of cattle theft in Raja Sadhoki village.
Muhammad Ashraf was employed with landlord Farid Ahmad. But he quit the job and hired a motorcycle-rickshaw for his livelihood. He was on his way home when accused Farid, his sons Yameen and others caught him. They took him to their outhouse, tortured him and later shot him dead.
Kamoke Saddar police have registered a case against the accused and are investigating.
