Police torture leaves suspect paralysed

By Our Correspondent

MIRPURKHAS, Dec 19: The Jhuddo police tortured a peasant, Long Machi, a resident of Kunri Taluka, as a result of which his right arm has been paralyzed.

Long, who is 30 years old, is being treated by an orthopaedic surgeon in the Mirpurkhas jail.

He told journalists on Thursday that he was arrested by the SHO, Jhuddo police station, Basheer Mangi, and ASI Najgi and kept in illegal confinement for 10 days.

He said that during this period he was severely tortured by being hung upside down the whole night in the lock up as a result of which his right arm had been paralyzed.

He accused the SHO of demanding Rs20,000 as bribe for his release and when he failed to do so, he was implicated in a narcotics possession case and chargesheeted in the court.

He appealed to the provincial police officer (Sindh), the Sindh governor, and the RPO (Hyderabad) to order an impartial inquiry into the incident and punish the police officers concerned.

CONDEMNED: The president, Crime Control and Social Welfare Association, Khan Mohammad Panwhar, and its general secretary, Mohammad Hashim Shar, have strongly condemned atrocities of the Jhuddo police.

In a joint statement, they said that the police were taking bribes in Digri Taluka from the villagers over false allegations of harbouring the dacoits and criminals.

They called upon the human rights bodies to take serious notice of the excesses of the Jhuddo police.

They said that Long Machi’s case was the latest incident in which his arm had been paralyzed due to being tortured and he had been implicated in a false case.

PMSA: The Para-Medical Staff Association (PMSA) continued their protest on Thursday against the failure of the Mirpurkhas police in recovering Dr Haji Mohammad Memon, medical superintendent of the Jhudo hospital, and another employee, Mohammad Kamil.

Protest demonstrations were held at Kunri, Talhi, and the Nabi Sar Road by the Pakistan Medical Association and the Para-Medical Staff Association.

The protesters demanded the recovery of the doctor.

Addressing the protesters, Khadim Hussain and Mohammad Bachal Memon, expressed grave concern over the delay in the recovery of the doctor and other hostages.

They called upon the provincial police officer, Syed Kamal Shah, to take notice of the rising incidents of kidnapping for ransom.

DEMO: A group of Bheel tribesmen belonging to Chachro, Tharparkar, held a protest demonstration on Thursday to protest against the negligence of the Chachro police in recovering an ancient dial of a temple.
