LAHORE, Dec 18: Former cricketer and chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board, Javed Burki and one of his business partner, Muzzamil Niazis were arrested by NAB on Wednesday in a defence purchase scam.

Burki and Niazi ran the Trans Mobile Company which entered into a deal with the Ministry of Defence for the production of Yasoob trucks for army when Mirza Aslam Beg was its COAS.

Niazi was arrested from Lahore while Javed Burki was picked up from his residence in Islamabad on Wednesday evening, their family sources said.

Muzzamil Khan’s wife Mrs Muzzamil Niazi told Dawn that a NAB team arrested her husband at around 7:30pm from his mother’s residence in Lahore.

Khan was taken to Chamba House where he was shown his warrants of arrest issued by the NAB. He would be produced before an accountability court on Thursday for shifting him to Karachi where he would be tried by an accountability court.

Family sources said Burki and Muzzamil had been facing multiple inquiries for the last five years on charges of misappropriating money given to their company. The Trans Mobile has not been in operation for the last three years.

Muzzamil’s family sources said the company was not released payments on time by the ministry of defence as a result it had to procure loans from different banks to run the operations.

Moreover, the accused had furnished complete record to the investigating teams of the NAB and its auditor to prove his innocence, claimed his wife.
