HYDERABAD: Promotion be given on seniority basis: Union

HYDERABAD, Dec 18: The All Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union has rejected promotion of Wapda employees to next grade on the basis of merit.

In a joint statement issued here on Tuesday, the chairman of the union, Abdul Latif Nizamani, provincial general secretary, Mohammad Iqbal Kaimkhani, and other office-bearers said in all the organizations employees were given promotion on seniority basis.

They said there was great unrest among Wapda employees due to the condition of examination for promotion to next grade.

They also opposed the promulgation of a new ordinance by the president under which hundreds of employees were sacked and sent on forced retirement.

They appealed to the president, the prime minister and other authorities concerned that old system of promotion should be restored and the presidential ordinance, 2002, should be withdrawn.

HESCO: The Hesco has contradicted the statement of an MNA of Hyderabad, terming the recent recruitment in the company the murder of merit.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, a spokesman for Hesco said vacant posts were advertised in newspapers and lists were prepared in accordance with educational qualifications of candidates.

He said appointments of SDOs and line superintendents were made on province-wide basis and recruitment of meter readers, assistant linemen and bill distributors was made on district basis.

He claimed Hesco chief Brig Tariq Arshad had personally contacted the MNA, MQM’s Prof Khalid Wahab, who had shown ignorance about the statement attributed to him.

However, when MNA Wahab was contacted on telephone by Dawn, he owned the statement and reiterated that malpractice had been reported in new appointments.

He said this was exactly what he had told the Hesco chief.

SPMSA: The Sindh Para Medical Staff Association (SPMSA), Liaquat Medical Hospital, at a meeting held here on Tuesday, said its office-bearers had nothing to do with activities of miscreants who were trying to pollute the atmosphere of the civil hospital and blackmailing the hospital administration to hide their own corrupt practices.

The meeting urged the civil hospital management to keep an eye on corrupt activities of miscreants and take legal action against them.

SINDH UNIVERSITY: The deans of faculties, directors of institutes and chairpersons of departments of the University of Sindh will remain present in their departments during the winter vacations to help students in filling forms for semester examinations of 2002.

This was decided at a meeting of the university, held here on Wednesday.

Vice-Chancellor Mazharul Haq Siddiqui presided over the meeting.

ENTRY TEST: The last date for submitting forms for admission to MBA, evening programme, at the Institute of Business Administration, University of Sindh, has been fixed at Dec 21.

The IBA director announced on Tuesday that the aptitude test would be conducted on Dec 21.

CONVOCATION: The sixth convocation of the Allama Iqbal Open University, Sindh chapter, will be held in Hyderabad on Feb 25.

Degrees will be awarded to candidates who completed their B.Ed, bachelor’s degree courses and post graduate courses during the years 1998-2001.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the convocation committee, presided over by Vice-Chancellor Prof (Dr) Syed Altaf Hussain, in Islamabad.
