KARACHI: CM-elect vows to ensure stability

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Dec 16: The chief minister-elect of Sindh, Ali Mohammed Mahar, has said all his efforts would be geared towards giving the province a stable and effective government that would work for the betterment of the lot of the people, who had pinned their hopes on the elected house for the solution of their problems.

Soon after taking his seat in the chamber of the chief minister, which was overcrowded by associates and government functionaries, he was responding to questions from journalists.

He said instead of indulging in politics for the sake of politics we would strive to do constructive work so that we can serve the people in a better way. We would also strive to bring about concrete changes in the law and order situation.

“The people are facing a number of problems such as water, health, education and rural-urban issues. It is, however, not possible to determine the order of priorities overnight,” Mr Mahar said, adding that in the first phase he would form a small cabinet. The entire attention of the government would be focused on the solution of the problems of the people.

His attention was drawn to the incident on Saturday in which the sanctity of the house was violated by police who behaved with elected members as if they were dealing with outlaws when they detained about 70 MPAs, including women, for more than five hours until they pounced upon and dragged away MPA Younus Khan from the assembly. Mr Mahar condemned the incident, and assured that he would look into the matter and see what suitable action could be taken to restore the dignity of the house and its members. “Mujhe yeh baat achhi nahin lagi (I see the incident with distaste). Every MPA deserves equal respect. We would ensure that the dignity of every member of the house is upheld.”

He said Sindh was facing a number of problems and for their solution a good team was needed, adds APP.

About Saturday’s incident, he assured that action would be taken in the light of the report of the inquiry.
