HYDERABAD: ‘Illiteracy root cause of social, economic problems’

HYDERABAD, Dec 16: Renowned sociologist Shahid Mohammad said that illiteracy was a big challenge and the root cause of social and economic problems being faced by Pakistan.

He said this while giving a speech at the Science Exhibition 2002, which was held at the Government Girls Pilot High School Hirabad on Monday.

He said that illiteracy could be eliminated with the collaboration of NGOs, the private sector, and community-based organizations.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, the EDO, education, Manzoor Hussain Bhutto, said that the district government had planned to introduce and encourage activity-oriented education.

He claimed that multi-dimensional steps were being taken to raise the standard of education.

He called upon the industrialists and scientific organizations to come forward and help the education department in promoting scientific activities and awareness, which was necessary for the prosperity of the country.

He said that the science exhibition would prove to be a milestone for the goals of practical education.

He said this type of exhibition will not only be a source of scientific awareness among the students but will also pave the way for discovering young scientists and new inventions in the scientific field.

He said that the district government had planned to establish an institute of information technology in addition to initiating market-oriented technical education in the district to eradicate unemployment.

The organizer of the exhibition, Mrs Rehmat Qazi, in her speech said that the exhibition was aimed to create a competitive atmosphere among students.

Prof Mohammad Hayat Kaka stressed for continuing the efforts on a permanent basis.

The Nazim, Union Council No3, Hyderabad city, Q. Mohammad Hakim, criticized the present education system under which heavy school bags were not only adding to the anxiety of the students but resulting in physical as well as mental disabilities among the students.

He said our education must be practical rather than critical.

A separate event of the Science Exhibition 2002 was held for boys at the Government Noor Mohammad High School.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, City Nazim Moinuddin Shaikh said that the scientific projects presented by the students in the exhibition had created new ideas for resolving civic problems as such these activities would not only prove beneficial for students but also for civic bodies.

He said that any group of students or young scientists could initiate the public-serving projects, and would be encouraged by the city as well as the district government.

More than a 100 government as well as private secondary schools participated in the exhibition.

Participating students presented at least 400 models with special reference to electronic, industrial, IT, environment, transport, and public health engineering.

At least 40 girls and 63 boys from various schools participated in the exhibition at the Government Girls Pilot High School with at least 100 models.
