Great Grandy bags feature event
LAHORE, Dec 15: Long shot bay Great Grandy, surged ahead in a late charge, to win the Kamalia Cup run over 1200 metres during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse Sunday.
Great Grandy beat another bay Blu’s Wendy by six lengths with Ahtisab further one-and-a-half lengths away in third place. Odds on favourite Jet Master could never pose a serious challenge at any stage of the race and finished a poor fourth among only six runners. The winner clocked one minute 15 3/5 seconds over the distance in this handicap race for class V animals. This was Great Grandy’s second successive victory in tremendous style.
A race earlier, a rank outsider bay filly Dare To Dream ran out a very impressive winner in the Khushab Plate, a term race for two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies contested over the distance of 1000 metres.
Prized filly Dare To Dream is from Re Play out-of-Streak Free. She defeated the even-money favourite filly Desert Lady by three-fourth of a length, leading all the way home. Another bay filly Guys And Dolls finished third, six lengths back with Prince Well completing the frame. Only six colts and fillies competed for this event.
Jockey Shahid Rehman and riding boy A. Aziz shared the day’s riding honours when both brought home a brace of winners. Shahid, rode 30 to 100 favourite Blue Dawn, in the second race and followed it with a splendid victory on Great Grandy in the feature event. Aziz scored his first victory on Flight Alert, in the opener and later returned home triumphantly on Dare To Dream in the fourth race.
