Steal The Show should land Quaid-i-Azam Trial Cup

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, Dec 14: Steal The Show, the thoroughbred four-year-old bay colt owned by S. Ehtisham H. Rizvi, should lift the Quaid-i-Azam Trial Cup to be contended by 11 runners, when the Winter Gymkhana Meeting gets under way on Sunday at the Karachi Racecourse.

The magnificent colt prevented from participating in the 2002 Pakistan Derby by the Lahore racing authorities earlier this year, will be partnered by M. Rehan once again and has the staying power plus the speed to pick up the spoils in this race.

Amongst the other runners is a six-year-old chestnut horse African Knight from Faisal Farooq’s stables, making his very first appearance on this track. The thoroughbred chestnut from Sirtristram out of Centre Afrique, is trained by Manzoor Baran and will carry an heavy impost of 12 stones on his back.

Also in with a chance to win the Cup is Syed Taufiq Kamal’s four-year- old bay filly Gambling Girl with 8-4 on her back and Abdul Raza’s brave four-year-old bay colt My Freedom, carrying only 8-7 on his back and having a 21-pound advantage over Steal The Show.

Seven events have been drawn up on the racing card. The first three will be contested over the sprinting distance of five furlongs. The next two races will be run over six furlongs. The sixth race will be of 10 gruelling furlongs and the concluding event will go over the distance of seven furlongs.

The first race begins at 12.00 noon.

In the opener with 13 runners vying for the top honours, owner-trainer M. Yaqoob Butt’s dark bay filly Black Magic if ticking, should beat Prism Of Life and Silent Fire.

In the next race top weight Superb Star had a good run only four days ago and with a competent lad astride, should get the better of Reincarnated and Power Plus.

If all goes well, Never Band finishing a close second, two and a quarter lengths behind Love Land on Wednesday, should win this five furlong encounter from Aziz Love and top weight Neelam Taab.

The fourth event of the afternoon seems reserved for Shah Mardan Shah II Pir Pagaro VII’s thoroughbred bay filly Love U Lady, challenged throughout the six furlong journey by Micky Mikado II and Donatello.

Nihal Pervaiz’s six-year-old bay horse Wonderful Peace will be going all out to complete a hat-trick of wins for the connections, although burdened to carry nine stones and four pounds on his back.

The speedy Guarantee, Al Jarrar, The Cleopatra and X’tasy will all be joining the fray.

In the concluding event going over seven furlongs, Messrs. Shoukat Awan & Humayun Mirza’s thoroughbred bay colt, Raqeeb-e-Azam, with five straight victories already under his belt, starts off as our day’s best and should be followed home by The Speed Star and Paddock Fancy.
