Ayub sets pole vault record

RAWALPINDI, Dec 14: Haveldar Muhammad Ayub set a new pole vault record as Pakistan Army made a clean- sweep of all the six events on the opening day of Inter- Services Athletics Championship at Army Stadium on Saturday.

Haveldar Ayub soared to 4.75 metres to create a new Inter-Services record in pole vault.

Besides pole vault, the other events decided on the first day of the three-day meet were:triple jump, 100 metres, 400 metres hurdles, 800 metres and shot put.

The cross country race, a 12 kilometres affair, is the only event scheduled for the second day Sunday, followed by seven events on Monday to wrap up the competitions.

Eight athletes each from the three teams, with six each to count, will participate in the cross country race.

Naib Essab (rpt Essab) of Pakistan Army was the runners up in the pole vault event, followed by Ghulam Sarwar of Pakistan Air Force.

Haveldar Allah Ditta won Pakistan Army the 400 metres hurdles race, followed by teammate Ilyas Raza and Tehseeb of PAF.

Sep. Waseem Khan of Pakistan Army leapt to 15.39 metres to take the gold medal in the triple jump, edging out fellow soldier, Sep. Zafar Iqbal, who made a jump of 15.38 metres. Sher Nawaz of Pakistan Navy was third.

Sep. Munawwar Taj of Pakistan Army ran the 100 metres sprint in 10.62 seconds to take the gold medal while his teammate, Naib Shehbaz, was runners up with a timing of 10.70 seconds.Majeed of Pakistan Navy was third.

In shot put, Haveldar Ashraf Ali, again from Pakistan Army, was the winner with a throw of 16.49 metres. He was followed by teammate Irshad (15.65 metres) and Shahid of PAF.

Islam Qadir (1min,56sec) and Muhammad Tariq (1min,57sec), both of them from Pakistan Army, were first and second in the 800 metres race while Amanat Masih of Pakistan Navy finished third.—APP
