LAHORE, Dec 13: The newly-appointed Punjab IGP on Friday hinted to make changes in the police system.

“It is too early to dub the new system a failure,” Masood Shah told reporters about his agenda as the new police chief of the province at the Civil Secretariat.

However, the IGP said there could be changes in the system if some areas need to be corrected. He also talked about reviewing the Police Ordinance, 2002, when some hassles in connection with public dealing in the new system were pointed out to him.

Defending the politically motivated appointments in the police, Mr Shah said: “As far as I am concerned, I don’t belong to this province. Neither I don’t know anybody here. So how could I have some political leaning.”

When pointed out, he said he had gone to meet Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi before his appointment as part of an interview.

The CM has to analyze people before their appointment, he believed.

The IGP claimed there would be no political interference in the police working and the MNAs and MPAs would have no role at all to play with it. Things would be done only on merit, he said.

Mr Shah said there were no differences between the police and the bureaucracy over the police ordinance and its rules of business passed by Governor Khalid Maqbool.

“I have met home secretary over this issue,” he said and added he was due to meet chief secretary and the chief minister to discuss it further in detail.
