Puma Star claims day’s feature event

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Dec 11: Long shot chestnut colt Puma Star outpaced his nine rivals to win the feature event during the mid-week Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse Wednesday.

Ridden by riding boy M. Zeeshan, Puma Star took a flying start and led the field all along the 1000 metres distance  and finally defeated bay Dahis Again by nine lengths, who nosed out favourite Bach View to third place. Bay filly Silver  Heart completed the frame.  Puma Star showed a vast   improved performance than his running on Sunday last while that of Bach View left much to be desired. Puma Star clocked one  minute 4 3/5 seconds on the dust track.

The outstanding performance of the afternoon  came in the fifth and supporting event when five to four favourite bay filly  Show Counting, humbled chestnut filly Zuhair Choice to win by a short-head in a tight finish.

Show Counting trained by Muhammad Hanif was astutely  ridden by jockey Salah-ud-Din II to return the timing of one  minute  5 4/5 seconds over 1000 metres.

This was a day of even  exchanges between punters  and bookmakers when three favourites won in a card of six events, all contested over the sprinting distance of 1000 metres.

The day’s races began on a disastrous note for the  favourite backers when a totally unbacked gelding Haroon Prince won  the opener defeating fancied Tiger’s Wood by five lengths. Tiger’s Wood was installed a firm  favourite after  the last-minute withdrawal of Sun Dance leaving nine  runners  in  the  field.

However, the victories of fancied Final Count Down and  Prime Force in the second and third events gave punters a good respite. But  this  proved short-lived when long shot roan-blue  Familiar Master stormed home in the fourth race.
