Manoeuvring for bypoll tickets

GUJRAT, Dec 11: Political groups and individuals have started manoeuvring to get tickets for contesting election to vacant provincial assembly seats PP-110 and PP-112 after the announcement of schedule by the Election Commission.

The PP-110 (Kunjah) has been declared vacant as Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi decided to retain Rahim Yar Khan seat.

Six candidates took part in the October elections from this constituency which was captured by Mr Elahi defeating PPP’s Tariq Javed, Mahmoodul Hasan Kunjahi (PAT), Ali Haroon Shah (PML-N) and Wasim Haider and Ajmal Chaudhry (independent).

The PML-Q high-ups have given ticket to former provincial law minister Raja Basharat of Rawalpindi while the rival parties have not yet made any decision.

PPP sources told this scribe that the party command was looking for a new candidate as it did not want to give ticket to Tariq Javed again.

It is learnt that Raja Basharat is likely to file his nomination papers on Thursday (today) for PP-110.

Similarly, PP-112 (Lalamusa) fell vacant when PPP’s MPA-elect Tanvir Ashraf Kaira was disqualified on the charges of presenting a fake BA degree. Kaira had defeated Naseer Abbas Sidh of the PML-Q in the October elections.

The PML-Q leadership has to pick from Naseer Sidh or Noorul Hasan Shah who resigned from the post of district Naib Nazim to contest elections from NA-107 but suffered defeat.

Rival parties are still undecided in this constituency, too.

Nazim Tauqeer Kaira, who is a cousin of Tanvir Kaira, told this scribe that Tanvir had moved the High Court against his disqualification and the ruling in this regard was likely to be announced in a day or so.
