Exchange of visits by India, Pakistan judges proposed
NEW DELHI, Dec 10: The head of India’s state-supported human rights body Justice J.S. Verma on Tuesday proposed an exchange of visits by judges from India and Pakistan to be able to benefit from each other’s experience as they both share the same legal system.
Press Trust of India quoted Justice Verma, chairman of the National Human Rights Commission as saying the move would be “mutually beneficial” notwithstanding the strained relations between India and Pakistan.
“Our legal systems are similar. We refer to their judgment and they strongly rely on our judgment”, Verma, a former Supreme Court Chief Justice, said.
Avoiding direct reference to the current stalemate in India-Pakistan relations, he said “Judicial exchanges are a totally different issue, if we can have it actively with America, Britain, Australia and Canada and many other countries, why not between India and Pakistan?”—J.N
