Shahzad and Nida top seeds for junior ranking tournament


LAHORE, Dec 9: Over 80 junior players from different parts of the country will be displaying their talent and potential in the Haleeb All Pakistan Junior Ranking tennis tournament which goes into action tomorrow at PLTA Bagh-i-Jinnah courts here.

The week long tournament is a premier junior tennis activity and points earned will help in establishing the ranking of the players.

This was stated by Bashir A Gill, Secretar, Punjab Lawn Tennis Association (PLTA) at a news conference here Monday.

Gill said the events to be contested are boys singles and junior doubles under-18, girls singles under-18, boys singles, under-14, girls singles under-14 and boys singles under-12.

Cash prizes of Rs,40,000 will be at stake.

He lauded the efforts and role of sponsors and said their constant support to tennis was admirable and it has positively contributed in the development of the game.

PLTA official urged the other business houses to follow CDL and extend financial help for holding national level tournament.

Meanwhile Shahzad Khan and Nida Rahim top seeds in boys and girls singles under-18.

The draws of the week long tournament were announced by Secretary, Punjab Lawn Tennis Association, Bashir A Gill, at ,PLTA Bagh-i-Jinnah courts on Monday.

Following are first eight seedings of players in boys and girls:

Boys singles under-18: Shahzad Khan (Faisalabad), Munir Ashiq (Lahore), Shahrukh Niazi (Lahore), Tanveer Ashiq (Lahore), Babar Ali (Rawaplindi), Suleman Bashir (Lahore), Jahangir Haider (Lahore), Omer Babar (Lahore).

Girls under-18: Nida Rahim, Iram Arshad, Shehla Nazir, Saba Aziz, Mehak Khan (Lahore), Zehra Omer (Islamabad).

All the boys matches will commence tomorrow. The girls matches will start from Wednesday.

One-set doubles match between Shahzad Khan and Omer Babar and Tavnir Ashiq and Imran Rashid marked the opening which was won by the former 6-4.—APP
